Mahagujarat Movement: History, Reasons & 1956 Reorganization Explained

Mahagujarat Movement  The Dhar Commission in June 1948 and the JVP Committee in December 1948 rejected the demand for a language-based state. Under this, in November 1956, Kutch, Saurashtra and Lower Gujarat were merged with Greater Mumbai and a bilingual Greater Mumbai state was established.   Background of the Mahagujarat Movement   Mahagujarat The word 'Mahagujarat' was coined by Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi in the 1937 meeting of the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad held at Karachi. Dholera Smart City: The Future of India

Dholera Smart City - India’s Future City

If any city can be called “India of the Future” in India’s development journey, then it is *Dholera Smart City. Located about 100 kilometers south of Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat, Dholera is a place from where a new chapter of India’s modern industry and technology is being written.

1. Location and History of Dholera

Dholera is located between Anand and Bhavnagar districts of Gujarat, on the Saurashtra side. Geographically, it is located near the Gulf of Kutch, so it gets the benefits of both sea and land.

In history, Dholera is also known as a part of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. Archaeologists have discovered many ancient remains here — which show that Dholera was an organized and planned settlement even thousands of years ago.

So, the dream of becoming a “smart city” today — is basically a modern transformation of a historical city.

2. The concept of Dholera Smart City

The dream of Dholera Smart City started in 2009 as part of the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) scheme of the Government of India.

Under this scheme, an industrial route is being built from Delhi to Mumbai, of which the Dholera Special Investment Region (Dholera SIR) is the most important center.

Dholera is being developed as “India’s First Greenfield Smart City” — that is, a city that is being built from the ground up, not on the basis of an old city.

3. Area and structure of Dholera

Dholera SIR is spread over an area of about 920 square kilometers — that is, bigger than Ahmedabad city!

The city is divided into three main zones:

1. Industrial Zone – for factories, manufacturing and tech industries

2. Residential Zone – for residential houses, townships and housing sectors

3. Commercial Zone – offices, markets, shopping and business centres

World-class infrastructure is being built for each zone — with robotic traffic systems, solar energy, smart water management and 5G connectivity.

4. Key Features of Dholera

The reason why Dholera is called a “smart city” is that it offers not just buildings, but a technology-based lifestyle.

Features:

Complete *Wi-Fi enabled city*

Underground electricity & optical fiber network

Smart waste management system

24x7 pure water & power supply

Green transport (electric buses, cycle tracks)

100% renewable energy zone

Not only this, a Solar Power Plant is also being developed in Dholera which will be the largest solar park in Asia.

5. Industry and Investment Opportunities

Dholera is being specially developed as a “Global Manufacturing Hub”. Many international companies have bought land here and are in the process of starting projects.

Electric Vehicle Manufacturing (EV Industry)

Drone Manufacturing

Renewable Energy

Electronics Assembly

Aerospace and Defense

Smart Textiles and Green Chemical Industries

Many big companies like *Tata Group, Reliance, Adani, Microsoft* have shown interest in this city.

The government is making Dholera an “*Ease of Doing Business Zone*” — meaning all approvals for setting up industries here will be available online, no red tape.

6. Transportation and Connectivity

Dholera’s biggest strength is its connectivity.

1. *Dholera International Airport* – Being developed under the new aviation policy, which will be bigger than Ahmedabad’s airport.

2. *Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway* – A 110 km long high-speed road is being built up to Dholera.

3. *Ahmedabad-Dholera Semi High-Speed Rail* – Fast train service like Metro, which will reduce the travel time to just 45 minutes.

4. *Port Connectivity* – Since Dholera has seaports like Goga and Bhavnagar, there will be direct facilities for international trade.

All this together makes Dholera “*India’s Next Business Gateway*”.

7. Environment and Green Development

Dholera is planned in such a way that both development and environment can go hand in hand.

*Green Belt Areas*, *Rainwater Harvesting*, and *Zero Waste Policy* are implemented in every zone of the city.

Dholera’s *Solar Park will have a capacity of 5000 MW*, which will keep the entire city suffocated with clean energy.

So, Dholera is a unique confluence of both “Green + Smart”.

8. Facilities for the people

Not only industries, but also life for the people is being beautifully arranged in Dholera.

* Land has been allocated for schools and universities.

* Smart hospitals, health centers and emergency facilities are being prepared.

* Gardens, lakes and cultural zones are being created for recreation.

* There will be a smart card system for every house, through which electricity, water and tax bills can be paid through an app.

So Dholera is not just a “city”, but a “lifestyle”.
